OVEREVIEW: Furniture Cover Pattern Maker to create precise patterns from design sketches or physical samples to guide the production of furniture covers, ensuring accurate fit and minimizing material waste. Key responsibilities include interpreting designs, drafting patterns manually or with CAD software, creating templates for various fabric types, cutting sample patterns, and collaborating with designers and production teams to achieve the final product. This role requires strong spatial and measurement skills, knowledge of different fabrics, and an understanding of furniture construction to include wood, metal, foam, and other coverings or materials.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design Interpretation: Read and understand design sketches, blueprints, and specifications provided by designers to identify shapes, sizes, and quantities of pattern pieces.
Pattern Drafting: Create precise, master patterns for each component of a furniture cover using manual drafting techniques or specialized CAD Software including Gerber Cut Designer
Dimension Calculation: Compute the exact dimensions for pattern pieces, accounting for varying seam tolerances, the stretching properties of various fabrics, and stretching properties of cut and sewing machine mechanics to ensure a proper fit.
Material Optimization: Determine the most efficient layout of pattern pieces on fabric to minimize material waste and reduce production costs.
Pattern Creation & Cutting: Cut out master or sample patterns from paper or cardboard and mark and cut the final fabric pieces for the cover.
Prototyping & Testing: Have general cutting, sewing, and upholstery skills to assign or to produce sample covers and test their fit and comfort on furniture, making necessary adjustments to the patterns.
Collaboration: Work closely with designers, upholsterers, and other production team members to refine patterns and ensure the final product meets quality standards.
Troubleshooting: Ability to analyze and dissect production quality occurrences as they relate to assessing the need for master pattern revisions.
Work Instruction/Inspection Plan creation: Work closely with designers and other production and quality team members to establish Work Instructions and Inspection Plans to ensure the final product meets the customer and internal quality standards.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
Pattern Making Expertise: Proficiency in manual drafting and/or pattern drafting using software like Gerber Cut Work Design and Gerber Cut Works or Optitex
Technical Measurement Skills: Ability to accurately measure and calculate dimensions for various fabric types and furniture components. Ability to accurately measure the affects of machine and fabric stretch to calculate moving dimensions
Fabric Knowledge: Experience working with different materials, including large repeats, leathers, and velvets, and understanding their behavior. Understand the 5 different fabric stretch factors as they relate to pattern making
Furniture Construction: Understanding of how furniture is assembled and upholstered to ensure the pattern fits correctly.
Attention to Detail: Meticulous precision in measuring, cutting, and fitting to ensure a high-quality final product.
Teamwork and Communication: Ability to collaborate effectively with a team and follow directions from designers and workroom managers.
