Maintenance Mechanic

Duties and Responsibilities

• Is highly diversified in complex machining operations

• Set up and operates a variety of machine shop tools and equipment

• Constructs, alters, or repairs tools, dies, jigs, parts and fixtures to close tolerances

• Read and interprets blueprints and drawings

• Is able to construct, diagnose and repair electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and controls

• Heat treats, welds or fabricates parts as required

• Plans and performs maintenance on all structures and equipment 

• Has knowledge of plumbing, electrical, hydraulic, general mechanical and grounds keeping systems

• Assembles and test operates machine to verify correction malfunction

• Observes and listens to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine and tooling malfunctions and determines needs for adjustments or repairs

• Dismantles machines or equipment to examine parts for defect or to remove defective part 

• Replaces defective part with new part or repairs or reproduces part from various kind of metal stock using machine tools, such as drill press, lathe, milling machine, borer, and grinder 

• Studies machine parts, replications, or specifications to determine type and dimensions of metal stock required

• Removes faulty machine engine and parts and completes paperwork when being sent out for repair

• Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications, dimensions and alignment of assembly using precision measuring instruments

• Maintains and lubricates machine tools and equipment

• Repairs or replaces faulty wiring, switches, or relays

• Cleans and maintains work area as needed

• Abides by all company policies regarding safety/health rules and regulations

• Adapts to various situations and adjusts to shifting priorities

• Performs other duties as assigned










Requirements and Qualifications

• Job duties require the equivalent of a high school education plus an indentured apprenticeship or a 2 year technical college education, with additional knowledge in industrial electronics, mechanics, advanced shop mathematics, complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, precision measuring instruments and/or the use of broad training in electrical and computer engineering

• With the above education and skills, it would take approximately 3 years to become proficient with the various machines used in production, the specific dies, tools, equipment, and the production process.

• Duties require moderate physical effort: bending, stretching, reaching, balancing, working in confined positions/spaces, twisting and moving in awkward positions around the plant area. Must be able to grasp and use hand tools and mechanical controls. Pushes/pulls die dolly with parts weighing 100 pounds approximately 5% of the time, rolling tool box weighing 600 pounds approximately 5% of the time. May lift heavy objects, such as parts or equipment weighing approximately 75-100 pounds 20% of the time.

• Concentrated mental and visual attention is required when performing complex machinery repairs or when working with individual lathes and drill presses in the machine shop. Must have normal or corrected vision, with the ability to do close-up work for long periods of time. Must have normal or corrected hearing and the ability to smell.

• High level of responsibility for equipment, including setups, adjustment, repairs/maintenance, fabricating replacement parts, and operations, where errors could result in extensive damages and major expense for the company. Equipment frequently used are hand tolls, dial indicators, micrometers, calipers, VOM meter, etc. 

• Errors in repairing and maintaining machinery would be detected during operation; however loss of materials, customer goodwill, and rework time may be involved 

• Due to working with electrical/mechanical parts and machinery, carless operation or faulty equipment maintenance could cause injury to others, such as crushed hand, loss of fingers, eyes, etc.  

• Work is performed in production area, here noise, dirt, dust, vibrations, and exposure to dangerous electrical/mechanical elements are present. Frequently in contact with oil/grease and mineral spirits

• Safety shoes and safety glasses are required. Earplugs are recommended during certain operations. Wear rubber gloves when working with mineral spirits. 

• Must be able to pass a drug screen and criminal background check
